THERE IS good news in store for thousands of students who do their post graduation as external students of the Savitribai Phule Pune University.

From this year onwards, instead of wasting a full academic year, those students who have not cleared their exams at the first attempt will be able to take exams for the concerned subjects in the same year itself in October.

The varsity will now offer students to clear the subjects in which they have a backlog in the same academic year instead of waiting till the next year’s examinations.

Confirming the move, Shivaji Ahire, head of external students section, said that the decision has been taken keeping in mind the future prospects of students. “Until now, even if a student failed in just one subject, they had to wait until March exam to take the paper again. However, we are introducing October re-exam for such students to save their academic loss due to time,” he said. The re-exam were already being offered for the under graduate degrees through external section but will now be offered for post graduate as well.

The move will benefit at least 20,000-odd students who take admissions in post graduation degree through external section. In 2015-2016, 9,988 students took admission for Master of Arts (MA) degrees while 9,944 students took admission for Master of Commerce (M.Com) degree.

Meanwhile, Ahire informed that the admissions for this year’s MA and MCom external courses for fresh students have already begun while the online forms for old students will open in a few days.
