JNU to offer short-term courses on animal welfare

As per the agreement, JNU will offer “six one-month certification courses and one six-month diploma course” in animal welfare starting from the current academic session.

JNU will begin short-term courses on animal welfare from this academic session, taking over the “operations and management of academic activities” of the National Institute of Animal Welfare (NIAW). JNU claimed it would be the “first time in the country” that such a course is offered by any university.

The transfer of operations took place after JNU vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Anil Sant, joint secretary of Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), on June 29. The NIAW was under the Ministry before the take over.

As per the agreement, JNU will offer “six one-month certification courses and one six-month diploma course” in animal welfare starting from the current academic session. It will also enable the university to start Master’s course in the subject from next year.

“Courses based purely on various aspects of animal welfare will be conducted for the first time in the country. To recognise animals as sentient beings, capable of experiencing pain and suffering, and to promote their welfare is an issue of importance and a part of the social development of nations worldwide,” the university said.

“JNU signed an MoA with the MoEFCC for the transfer of operations and management of academic activities of the National Institute of Animal Welfare to JNU,” the university said in a statement. The MoA was signed in the presence of Union ministers Prakash Javadekar and Smriti Irani at Shastri Bhavan.
