With increasing number of inmates committing suicide at Kapurthala Modern jail by hanging themselves, it has now been decided to remove iron grills and exhaust fans from the jail’s toilets and washrooms. These would be put up in such a manner that the inmates cannot reach them.
Nearly 56 inmates have died under mysterious circumstances ever since the Kapurthala Modern Jail came into existence in 2011. A number of inmates hanged themselves from iron grills and exhaust fans of the toilets and washrooms.
In most of the cases, the inmates had used “parna” (a cloth used for keeping on the shoulders or covering head) by hanging themselves with the grills. Jail sources said they cannot ban this cloth at the jail as religious sentiments of people are attached to it.
Superintendent of Jail Paramjit Singh Sandhu, when contacted, said: “We will remove these grills from the current location and install them from outside so that inmates cannot reach them. Exhaust fans too will be re-installed in a similar manner.
“The Punjab Police Housing corporation has already conducted a survey in this regard and work will be started soon.,” Sandhu added.
While the Kapurthala Modern Jail has the capacity of 2,600 inmates, it houses around 3,600 inmates.
