After the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation received a single bid for the smart parking lots, the issue would be discussed in the Finance and Contract Committee meeting scheduled to be held on September 20. Sources said the civic body is planning to float tenders again. Only one company took part in the technical bids that were opened two days ago. As per the procedure, one company could not be allotted the work.

In the last Finance and Contract Committee meeting, it was approved to invite big companies to convert the parking lots into smart ones. The smart parking is aimed at making the chaotic parking in the city systematic. The civic body had invited big companies so that the parking lots be managed by them instead of petty contractors. As many as 25 parking lots were to be converted into smart ones.

Facing irregularities at the end of parking contractors who would overcharge commuters, the municipal commissioner had ordered to invite big companies to manage the parking lots. The civic body had conducted a series of checks wherein they found that vehicle-owners were overcharged. Instead of Rs 5 (rate permitted by MC) for car owners, parking contractors charged Rs 10 and even Rs 20.

According to the smart parking system, there would be a central server that will connect the management of all the parking lots. CCTVs will be installed from where the employees and municipal officials will overlook all the activities. A mobile application would also be in place for the residents to check the live status of the parking situation. No hike in parking rates was recommended. Also, there would be smart rechargeable cards for entry at the parking lots, which will be made at the e-sampark centres. The parking lots would be made fully-automatic with boom barriers.
