The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has formed five teams that will undertake city’s sanitation after midnight till 6 in the morning. Each team will be headed by a police inspector under each police station in city’s New West Zone (NWZ).
Till now, the AMC sanitation workers arranged from other zones along with machines were operational in daytime. But there were reports of obstruction from striking safai kamdaars who have been demanding to regularise their services. Despite AMC resorting to police help and registering FIRs against some sanitation workers, the safai kamdaars have again started to obstruct the garbage removal.
“Initially there were obstructions by the sanitation workers on strike but later it stopped after police intervention. But recently, it has started again with even physical assault of drivers of garbage collection vehicle. To stop this different teams with police and AMC officials have been formed after a joint meeting of AMC and police department today,” said AMC commissioner Mukesh Kumar. The reason for night operations has been cited as to get rid of traffic issues as well as to minimise obstruction by the workers on strike. Another measure to put a check on this is recording of daily sanitation work. Each team formed has to ensure that a videographer is accompanying them.
The orders issued by the municipal commissioner Tuesday also states that every team has to reach the police station latest by 12.30 am and contact the concerned police inspector. Prior to the work, the route plan has to be chalked out and intimated to the police in advance on daily basis. This arrangement is to be operational for a month till October 20. Demanding to be converted into regular AMC staff, the daily wage workers from the New West zone, members of Gujarat Mazdoor Sabha (GMS) are on strike since August 18.
