Porbandar police have seized Rs 25 lakh cash from a car at Mokar village in Ranavav taluka and detained a tile trader and the driver in this connection. A cashier in the Jamjodhpur branch of Jamnagar District Cooperative Bank, who was travelling with them, managed to escape as soon as police intercepted the car Thursday night. Acting on a tip-off, police chased the car and managed to intercept it near Mokar village at around 10 pm Thursday. While cashier Rock Patel managed to run away, police detained driver Virendra Dharani and ceramic tile trader Mayur Makadiya.

Police searched the car and found Rs 25 lakh cash. There were 1,073 notes of Rs 2000 denomination and the rest amount was in smaller denominations of Rs 100, Rs 50 and Rs10, police said.

“Dharani and Makadiya claims that the cash belonged to Patel. They are claiming that they were merely accompanying Patel to Mokar village where he was to deliver the cash to Bipin Chandarana and Chetan Chandarana alias Jalaram. They were supposed to get commission on safe delivery of the cash,” sub-inspector Ravirajsinh Rana said.

Police said that Bipin, who runs a small novelty store in Rajeevnagar area of Porbandar, and Chetan, who runs a provision store in Adiyana, disappeared without accepting the cash as they found presence of other people at the point where they had agreed to meet Patel. On Friday, the duo were called for questioning. After 24 hours, Dharani and Makadiya were released from detention, while Bipin and Chetan were also allowed to go home after questioning, police said.
