A week after three women allegedly tried to immolate themselves to protest cattle impounding drive by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), Rajkot city police commissioner issued a notification on Tuesday prohibiting transportation of cattle to the city from outside and ordering shifting of unregistered cattle to animal hostels run by the civic body.
“It has been observed for some time now that cattle from nearby villages and areas are let lose in Rajkot city. Therefore, despite the regular cattle impounding drive by Rajkot Municipal Corporation, serious accidents are taking place often due to cattle let lose in this manner on city roads from areas outside Rajkot and cattle which are from the city but not registered.
“Taking these facts into account and in the interest of residents of Rajkot and public interest at large, it is hereby ordered that no cattle which is not registered with RMC shall be brought to Rajkot from any area outside Rajkot city limits and that those cattle herders in the city whose cattle are not registered shall shift such unregistered cattle to animal hostels set up by RMC or outside city limits immediately,” city police commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot stated in the notification. The was made public on Tuesday. It will remain in force for two months.
