Yogesh Raut,a prime suspect in the gangrape and murder of software techie Nayana Pujari, has claimed that he had escaped from Sassoon hospital with the help of Yerawada jail doctors. Raut, who had been on the run for 20 months, was arrested from Shirdi on May 31.

“I got money from my brother Manoj during the trial proceedings. I gave it to Nitin Modha,an accused in the Sagar Sahani murder. He passed it on to doctors in Yerawada jail through their assistants. A doctor then did a check-up and issued a false paper saying I’m suffering from itching and should be admitted to Sassoon hospital,” he said.

“I was taken to the hospital from Yerawada jail around 10.30 am on September 17,2011. A cop named Patil (police naik Sumersingh Patil) in police vehicle demanded Rs 2,000 for allowing me to meet my family. My brother gave me Rs 6,000 of which I gave Rs 2,000 to Patil, who removed my handcuffs. I told my brother, wife, daughter and mother that I am going to be punished in this case. I then gave the cops a slip, fled from hospital and reached Hadapsar in an autorickshaw around 2.30 pm.”

Raut,in his statement, said during the trial his lawyer B A Aloor said he has no option but to run away. “He told me that the case is difficult as the DNA reports are against me,” he said.

Raut’s statement is a part of a recent chargesheet filed by the Pune police in court. Aloor, however, said the statement is false. “The investigating officer has included my name to defame me. I never had such a conversation with Raut. Being his lawyer,I only spoke to him about the case. I am not supposed to reveal the details of the conversation between us as per Section 126 of the Evidence Act. I am going to send a legal notice to the officer.”

Raut, along with Rajesh Choudhary,Mahesh Thakur of Khed and Vishal Kadam of Satara, were arrested for allegedly gangraping and murdering Pujari in October 2009.

According to Raut’s statement, after talking to Aloor,he had a discussion with Modha — also lodged in Yerawada jail. “Modha said he knows my lawyer and what he was saying was right. Modha said earlier a sarpanch planned to ‘end’ his case by escaping. Then I started thinking about escaping. Modha said I will have to ‘manage’ the Sassoon doctors and cops,” Raut said.

Raut further went to Daund in a truck, from there to Surat and then to Delhi and Amritsar by train. There he acquired a fake name of Ravi Ashok Bhalla and procured a bogus driving licence and PAN card.

A police team led by Inspector Satish Govekar nabbed Raut from Shirdi on May 31. He was arrested in a separate offence of escaping from police custody, registered at Bund Garden police station. Police had also arrested his brother Manoj for helping him. “Earlier, police naik Patil was also arrested and dismissed. Raut’s statement is being verified. The role of jail doctors is also being probed,” said Govekar.
