Rajesh Pillay Academy (RPA) scraped to a win against Priyadarshini Sports Club in the opening match of the 31st edition of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar hockey tournament. The tournament is being played at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey stadium.
Shivanand Gholap opened the scoring for Rajesh Pillay Academy with a goal in the 14th minute. Priyadarshini Sports Club soon restored parity through Aravind Pillay off an accurate Saqlain Sayyad pass. Rameshwar Engole,however,got the all-important winner for Rajesh Pillay Academy as he converted a pass from Gholap in the 42nd minute to give his side victory. In the second match,Railway Boys Club Pune (RBCP) defeated Friends Union 2-0. Akash Khaire gave RBCP the lead in the 7th minute and Akhilesh Singh added the second goal in the 38th minute to give RBCP full points.
Vikram Pillay Academy prevailed over Metro Sports Club in one of the most interesting matches of the day. Both teams were locked at two goals each in 70 minutes. Zeeshan Shaikh and Rakesh Pollaya scored for Vikram Pillay Academy B while Shubham Shelar and Mayur Bhondve scored for Metro Sports Club. In the penalty shoot-out,Kevin Parmar,Akash Salvi,Kunal Pawar and Zeeshan Shaikh converted their penalty strokes while Bhondve,Pranav Mane and Altamesh Sayyad were successful for Metro Sports Club. Ajinkya Kalbhor and Ritesh Pillay missed their respective strokes which allowed Vikram Pillay Academy a victorious beginning to their campaign. On Sunday,Super XI will take on Rakshak Sports Club while Pune City Police will play against Prabhakar Aspat Academy. The last match of the day will be played between Railway Police Line Boys and Vikram Pillay Academy.
