Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said he will convince senior NCP leader P A Sangma not to file his candidature for the presidential polls.

Addressing the media after he inaugurated an NCP function in the city,Pawar said,“I will meet him and convince him to withdraw. I am sure he will respect the party decision and not join the presidential race.”

When asked if the party was contemplating any action against Sangma if he refuses to backtrack,Pawar said,“He is a very senior party leader and there is no question of any action against him. I am sure he will listen to us and the issue will not be stretched to that extent.”

On Thursday, after his meeting with Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi ,Pawar had announced that his party will support the UPA candidate.

Pawar said he was confident about senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee’s win in the presidential election. “He will certainly win. The decision of his candidature was taken after thorough deliberations. I think we have enough numbers. I hope, for the sake of Bengali pride,Mamata Bannerjee will also support Mukherjee in the presidential poll,” he said.
