Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who is serving his sentence at Yerawada Central Jail in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, has been granted a parole for 30 days to take care of wife Manyata, who is ill. If formalities are completed,he is likely to be released on Saturday morning.

Earlier Dutt was granted a 14-day furlough in the first week of October and had got a 14-day extension on medical grounds. The 53-year-old actor, who had surrendered in May after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction in the case for illegal possession of weapons,is currently serving the remaining 42 months of his five-year sentence.

Pune Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh. “I have signed the parole application after the reports forwarded by the police and the Yerawada jail authorities were received and the reason stated is that his wife Manyata is ill and has to undergo treatment and a surgery,” said Deshmukh.

He said the reports were verified before it was approved. He can be released on a surety and personal bond of Rs 5,000 each and the Yerwada prison superintendent has to decide on the release, said Deshmukh. The Divisional Commissioner said the parole condition also states that he has to report to the Khargar police station twice a week.

Yerawada Prison superintendent Yogesh Desai said,“We have not yet received any communication on Dutt’s parole. After we receive it,he will be released after completion of the formalities if any. Sources said Dutt can be released even on Saturday morning,if the formalities are completed.

An inmate is granted two types of prison leaves as per the manual. Parole is granted in case he or she has a serious family issue like illness or a family function to attend, like a wedding. As per procedure, after an inmate seeks parole,a report from the police station and all other papers like medical reports of the relative (in case of illness being reason for parole) are then sent to the divisional commissioner under whose jurisdiction the jail falls.
