Almost a year after she retired as the first woman President of India,Pratibha Patil on Thursday moved into the bungalow provided to her by the government. A vastu shanti function (house warming ceremony) attended by select relatives and friends was held at the Raigad Bungalow in the city.
The bungalow was allotted to her after she gave up an under-construction palatial house on a defence plot in Khadki, following a controversy.
Sources said keys of Raigad Bungalow were handed over to her by the Central Public Works Department last week after renovation work that lasted a little over five months. They said Patil had been staying with her daughter at a Baner Road address for the last few days.
The complex on a 56,239 sq ft plot next to the state CID Headquarter has two fortified compounds, two security cabins,a guard room and three surveillance posts.
About a dozen guests attended the function amid tight security said a source.
According to officials privy to the renovation work, over Rs 2 crore was spent on it and several rooms were added to the complex and the compound walls were fortified. The bungalow that used to be the official residence of the Director of Police Wireless Maharashtra was made available to Patil after she gave up the Khadki bungalow.
Patil retired in July,2012 and has been since been staying in Delhi waiting for her retirement bungalow to be ready.
