Collector Deshmukh says those not reporting duplication of name stand to face action under Representation of People Act

Pune district collector Vikas Deshmukh has warned voters not intimating the election office about duplication of names in the electoral rolls that they stand to face action under the Representation of People Act.

He said the drive for revision of the electoral rolls in the district has seen 43,190 registration forms being submitted till October 21.

He said suo motu action could be initiated against persons whose names have been added more than once to the voter list and notices will be served on them. With the drive to go on till October 31,he has urged eligible voters who are yet to submit forms to do it immediately. He said it is the responsibility of a voter who has shifted residence to intimate the electoral registration officer concerned. He said his officers are doing the rounds to check the names. “We have served notices earlier as well and will do so this time as well,’’ said Deshmukh.

The drive by the district election office has seen 36,408 new registrations,1,904 deletions and 4,188 corrections in the voter list. There were 676 corrections in photo identity proof.

With the drive reaching out to new voters in colleges,the collector said that forms are collected at the college level by representatives appointed for the purpose,but sorting out the forms will be done by collectorate officials.

With a week to go for new registrations,the collector has urged people to submit forms immediately.

He said that while registrations of new voters will end in October,the process of deletion and correction will continue in November. The final list will be ready on January 5. The collector has permitted registered political parties to appoint booth-level agents to submit forms of new voters.

There were 65.47 lakh voters in Pune district in October 2011.

After the special summary drive by EC,1.61 lakh new names were included in the voters list while 30,273 names were deleted from the list as some of them had passed away and some moved out of the district. Currently,there are 66.89 lakh voters in the district.
