The University of Pune may have to rethink about presenting budget for the financial year 2009-10 in the senate meeting to be held on March 28,as it could be a violation of election code of conduct. The Mumbai University has recently received a letter from Mumbai deputy district election officer saying that the senate meeting could not announce any new schemes in the budget,as it would be a violation of the election code of conduct. The letter also states that the senate could not entertain any proposals regarding new colleges or academic courses. “The university cannot take any policy decisions that will have impact on voters,” says the letter. Considering the letter received by the Mumbai University, the UoP can also face restriction on presenting budget. Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch (VVM) on Wednesday submitted a letter to the vice chancellor of the UoP in this backdrop appealing him not to allow senate member to table budget for 2009-10.Dhananjay Kulkarni, convenor of VVM has written this letter. “The UoP can present vote-on-account instead of full fledged budget and can then hold a special senate meeting for the budget,” he has mentioned in his letter. Meanwhile, the UoP has sent a letter to the election deputy district election officer asking whether it could present the budget. “We are expecting the reply by Thursday,” said a senior officer of the UoP.
