City NCP chief Vandana Chavan has been given the party ticket for Rajya Sabha, elections for which will be held in the Budget session of the state legislative Assembly. The term of four Rajya Sabha MPs from the state will end this month. A few years ago Chavan was elected to state legislative council which led to unrest in the city unit of the party. She had a brief tenure of nine months as legislative council but the party preferred sulking party leader Anil Bhosale for the council after her term expired.
Chavan is also the first woman NCP chief of the city and she led the party from the front in the civic polls in 2012. A former mayor, who is very vocal on environment issues,Chavan managed to make the party change its view on maintaining the green hills of the city by not allowing development work there.
I am very happy that the party has nominated me for Rajya Sabha seat. I was elected as mayor of the city 15 years ago and it is on the same day after so many years that the opportunity for Rajya Sabha has come to me, she said.
