The University of Pune (UoP),which had recently proposed to convert the stipend it hands out to MPhil and PhD students into scholarships meant only for the meritorious, has decided not to go ahead with this plan this year. It will award scholarship to all students. The decision has come in after students opposed the move.
The UoP has been sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the purpose. However, not many students applied this year. After students opposed the universitys plans, the acting vice-chancellor,Sanjay Chahande formed a two-member committee, which looked into the matter and took the decision. The decision was agreed upon by the management council in their recent meeting at the campus. Senate member Nandkumar Nikam, who was also a member of the committee, said,For the past four to five years,we have been giving MPhil students from all the departments and two PhD students a stipend. However, now we want to convert this amount to a scholarship, which cannot be given to everyone.
The committee is still preparing rules for these scholarships, which will be discussed in the next management council meeting. If the rules are agreed upon by the council, they will be implemented from the next year, said Nikam.
Arunkumar Walunj, member of the management council, said,The rules will remain unchanged for the current year. We reached this decision after the students protested against the idea. Also, this year,we have received few applications for scholarships. Of the Rs 5 crore sanctioned for this purpose, only about Rs 86 lakh have been used. The issue will be discussed in the next meeting.
