The University of Pune (UoP) emerging a favoured destination for campus recruitment has prompted a move to upgrade the Students Welfare department, which handles placement activities,to a full-fledged placement cell.
With companies like Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro, besides even the Indian Air Force evincing interest in tapping potential recruits from the varsity and giving more job options for students from all departments, including arts and commerce,Students Welfare department director Sambhaji Pathare hopes the placement cell will be operational in the next academic year. Talks are on with the university management.
Although colleges affiliated with the UoP have their individual placement cells, the university started its own placement camp on campus in 2008.
Pathare said,When we stared off in January,2008,we could only place one student,in Wipro. We have come a long way from there. From July last year till now we have been able to place around 2,000 students. The placements are still going on and we hope to have a good number of students placed till the time the drive is completed, added Pathare.
Now,we have many more companies approaching us for placements and the drives in all the three districts have been a success. Many of the students from arts as well as commerce streams are being selected for jobs in various companies. These students are mainly getting back office jobs but we are seeing a steady increase in the number of students getting absorbed from departments other than the professional courses.
The large number of placements this year only highlights the need for a cell to be set up by the varsity. Pathare added,For a university that has a students population of close to 7 lakh,we need an active placement cell. At the moment, the work has been taken up by the Board of College and University Development but there is a need for a department which will be dedicated to placement related work.
What we have noticed over the years is that only about 15-20 per cent of the students are selected in campus placements. We are planning to make grooming students a prime activity of the placement cell.
