Yerawada police arrested a 30-year-old undertrial prisoner for trying to smuggle ganja inside Yerwada Central Prison Tuesday.

On June 27,Amit Bharatlal Yadav was found carrying 40 grams of the contraband,safely hidden in a sachet in the fake sole of his slipper,police said.

Police suspect that one of Yadav’s friends exchanged slippers with him when he had gone to Shivajinagar court on June 27.

While returning to the jail after his hearing,Yadav was thoroughly frisked at the main entrance of the prison.

Yadav is undergoing a trial in a murder case. After the contraband was found,Yerwada police station registered a case against Yadav under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Yadav was formally arrested Tuesday. A holiday magistrate court on Wednesday remanded him to police custody till September 3.
