Two incidents took place at Urse toll plaza,identified as accident-prone by highway police
Two persons were killed and six injured in three separate accidents on the expressway in the early hours of Tuesday. Those injured include resident deputy collector of Sindhudurg district Sushant Khandekar and two Korean nationals.
Of the three mishaps,two reportedly took place on a stretch near Urse toll plaza on expressway which has been identified as an accident-prone spot by the state highway police.
In the first incident,a car speeding towards Mumbai from Pune hit a truck from behind near Devale bridge in Lonavala on the Expressway around 1.30 am. The impact was so severe that the two persons in the car died on the spot,while three were injured. The incident was registered at the Lonavala rural police station. Police identified the deceased as Abhijit Satish Waydande (30) of Borivli and Dipti Pramod Tawde (23) of Vikroli in Mumbai. Those injured included Rahul Pednekar (28),Suyog Bhalerao (28) and Vaishnavi Pote (22),all from Dombivli in Mumbai.
Meanwhile,in another mishap,a driver of a government vehicle lost control and hit a road divider near Urse toll plaza on the Expressway around 4.30 am. Khandekar who was travelling in the car was injured.
Talegaon Dabhade police said Khandekar along with government officer Ashok Sable was going to Mumbai for a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister on Tuesday when driver Yogendra Kolamkar reportedly lost control and the car hit the road divider. The trio were taken to Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi and are out of danger,police said.
Two Koreans,identified as Waun Jason and Shin Bang,who were coming to Pune from Mumbai in a car were injured in the third mishap at Hinoday Bridge near Urse toll plaza on the expressway around 5 am. Police said they were coming to Pune for some work at Tata Motors when driver Purushottam Sitapure reportedly lost control and the car hit a truck. They were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile,the stretch on the expressway near Urse toll post is among the 19 accident prone spots identified by the state highway police.
There have been over 680 deaths in more than around 10,000 small and major accidents since 2005 on the expressway. More than 2,000 persons were seriously injured. In the last eight months,as many as 76 persons have lost their lives.
Meanwhile,a man riding a scooter was killed and the pillion rider injured after a speeding car knocked them down at Bhel Chowk in Nigdi around 10.30 pm on Monday. Police have identified the deceased as Nishant Ratilal Gugale (36) of Akurdi.
An offence has been registered against car driver Prakash Dhanawde (43). The Nigdi police said when Dhanawde was driving the car from Bijlinagar to Bhel Chowk,he first knocked down a motorcycle and then collided with a scooter. The scooter rider and the pillion were injured and were rushed to a hospital where Gugale reportedly succumbed to his injuries.
