Additional sessions judge Suchitra Ghodke sentenced two persons —Madan Ankush Davare (20) and Sanket Dadabhau Saravade (20) — to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 on eachfor raping a mentally challenged minor girl.

Both are residents of Chandus village in Khed. The victim was also from the same village. According to the prosecution, the incident took place on August 19,2011 when the girl had taken her goats to graze on the banks of Bhama river. As per the complaint, her neighbour Saravade approached her with Davare and raped her. When the girl did not return home on time, her father launched a search and found her with two persons. The girl narrated the incident and her father registered a complaint the next day.

Additional public prosecutor Vivek Kulkarni said,“The girl had not even reported about the earlier two occasions when they had raped her.” He added there was confusion over girl’s age as she and her father had different versions. The court relied on the girl’s birth certificate and medical examination and it was proved that she was 15 years and five months old when the incident took place.
