Pune police crime branch on Thursday claimed to have solved 18 cases of chain snatching following the arrest of two suspects and recovery of 255 gram gold ornaments.
A team from the anti-chain-snatching squad led by inspector Chandrakant Ghodke of the crime branch arrested Javed Ali Irani of Purandar and Jafar Ali Irani of Shivajinagar,both of whom were on police records. An accomplice,Faiyyaz Zafri,who is from Madhya Pradesh,is absconding.
The arrests were made on a tip-off from informants of constables Raju Borde and Baba Dandage.
Ghodke said,The suspects used to snatch chains in the city and flee outside. We now know they have been regularly changing their place of stay to evade us. The suspects had mortgaged the looted gold to a private money lender,from whom we made the recovery.
Additional commissioner of police (Crime Branch) Shahaji Solunke said,We have also questioned the moneylender,but his involvement in the case could not be ascertained.
Ghodke said,These suspects targeted people in the jurisdiction of Vishrantwadi,Sangvi,Sahakar Nagar,Lashkar,Swargate,Bhosari MIDC,Khadak,Chinchwad,Kondhwa,Yerawada,Nigdi and Mundhwa police stations.
The investigating team comprised constables Digambar Adagale,Manohar Bhoine,Dilip Pawar,Ram Pachpute,Sharad Allapurkar,Adarsh Chavan,Sameer Patel and Shivaji Jadhav.
