Southern Command Gold Cup,a Grade III race conducted on the second Sunday of September every year at the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC),Pune will witness a display of military combat power this year. The race on September 9 will also have 11 military bands,both brass and pipe,entertaining the audience during breaks between the races.
The combat demonstration will see tanks,Combat Vehicles and Artillery guns moving in the arena and elite the elite Special Forces displaying para-motor and skydiving skills. Slithering by troops in full combat load after they descend from helicopters is part of the show.
The event will start at 2.20 pm with a military band and para-motor display,followed by the Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw Memorial Trophy,a Class II race that will have some of the best horses and jockeys of India vying for the honours. It will be followed by a combat display at 3.20 pm featuring skydiving and slithering drills,besides manoeuvres by tanks and infantry combat vehicles. The Southern Command Gold Cup Race will begin at 4 pm,as per a press release.
