With incidents of crime in the Hinjewadi-Wakad areas continuing to rise, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) is pressing for a radio cab service for Pune. RTA member Baba Shinde, who said he has been following the matter since 2010,added that it is time that the service is sanctioned for Pune.

The RTA has put forth the matter to the State Transport Authority (STA).

According to the RTA,the non-availability of prompt public transport has been the prime reason for rising incidents of theft and rape.

Introducing ‘radio cab’ in the city will help address the problem, said RTA member Baba Shinde.

“Incidents of crime, rape and theft have gone up significantly in Hinjewadi and Talawade. The establishments in these areas work 24X7 while a large number of people travel to these areas on a daily basis,” he said.

Shinde said that owners of private cabs do offer their services in the Hinjewadi and Wakad areas, but keeping track of all private cabs is a tedious task. If the STA approves the ‘radio cab’ service at reasonable rates, the nuisance of private cabs could be restricted,he added. He has stated that there are nearly 1,200 such cabs operating in the area.

Shinde said the RTA gave clearance to ‘radio cab’ service in August 2009,after which the proposal was sent to the STA for further approval.

He said that three private companies have submitted proposals to start the ‘radio cab’ service in the city with the cabs to be on call basis for 24 hours, adding that,“With these services the commuters, therefore, will get assured service.”
