In a bid to keep away touts and middlemen, the Food and Civil Supplies department has initiated a drive to distribute ration cards through special E-seva kendras to be set up in different parts of the city. With as many as 43 kendras set up in eight zones, new applicants will be issued ration cards within a fortnight.

“The effort is to keep away touts and middlemen. The applicants have to follow a procedure and on submitting the application, the Spanco Ltd managed kendras will hand over the documents to the rationing office. The office will in turn complete the formalities and give the ready ration cards to the kendras, which will issue the cards after sending an intimation through SMS,’’ said D Jawanjal, district food and supplies officer.

Vikram Dakwale, deputy manager of Spanco Ltd,Pune district, said the aim is to streamline the system and have all details online. “All aspects, including new applicants, duplicate ration cards as well as change in address, are being covered under this drive,’’said Dakwale.

In a recent drive, many ration cards that were issued in the city were found to be bogus or irregular. Minister Anil Deshmukh had revealed at a recent meeting that the drive unearthed 2,70,365 bogus ration cards in the district.

Jawanjal said though there is a computerised data of new ration cards, initiatives have been taken to computerise data of the existing ration cards in the district.

The district has nearly 9 lakh ration cards for all the three categories — Below Poverty Line (BPL),Above Poverty Line (APL) and White ration cards.

Officials of the Spanco Ltd said that any individual who wishes to apply for a new ration card should do so in their respective zones.

“Each zone covers various areas in the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The applicant can call up the toll free number 1800-2339000 between 9.30 am-7 pm to find out about their nearest kendra,’’said Dakwale.

The kendras also help the district administration in issuing domicile, income generation,non-creamy layer and caste certificates. “The ration cards will be an additional service by the company,’’ he added.
