The crime branch of Pune police have arrested three persons for allegedly hijacking cars after hiring them from private travel firms through Justdial service.
The suspects have been identified as Rakesh Ashok Padwal (23) a resident of Anand Park in Vishrantwadi,his cousin Sachin Shivaji Padwal (23) and an aide Subhash Mithalal Fulmali (20),both from Loni Dhamni in Ambegaon taluka. Police have recovered four vehicles,including two cars,and a motorcycle along with bogus documents,all worth Rs 30.4 lakh, from them.
Police said the suspects used to travel to different cities in the state and avail of Justdail service seeking numbers of private travel firms to hire cars. They used to hire the cars as customers and later fled with the cars after threatening the drivers at knife-point,they said.
Police said the suspects committed such crimes in Pune,Auranagabad,Nashik and Ahmednagar. Last month,they had hired a vehicle and hijacked it under the jurisdiction of Vishrantwadi police.
Following a tip-off to police naik Dinesh Shinde,a police team led by inspector Arun Walture laid a trap and arrested Rakesh Padwal on Alandi Road around 8 pm on May 25. Police also arrested Sachin and Subhash.
Investigation revealed that after hijacking cars,the suspects used to tamper with the number plates and prepare forged documents to sell them. A search is on for a key suspect Shakil Sayyad of Buldhana who prepared bogus documents for them, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (crime) Rajendra Bhamre.
