The interrogation of suspects revealed a meticulous modus operandi of gangs that first recce the area for presence of police before they strike and have back-up vehicles.
A cop with the anti-chain-snatching squad of Pune police said,Interrogation of suspects revealed a meticulous modus operandi. We know that some gang members first recce the area to see if police are present. Then two of them strike.
Interrogation revealed that some gang member follow them in a vehicle to give them back-up support if needed. The suspects are well aware that after they strike, the description of their clothes is given to police. The gang members in the back-up vehicles often help them change their clothes.
The pattern observed shows that victims are women, especially elderly ones, and the criminals target them either early in the morning or in the evening.
Additional commissioner of police (Crime Branch) Shahaji Solunke said,The underlining feature of their modus operandi is the element of surprise. So we have undertaken extensive awareness programmes at police stations on precautions to be taken for people walking on lonely stretches.
Solunke added,Adding to our concern,in some recent places, chain snatchers have started striking at crowded places where they know there is scope to flee immediately. These cases have taken place under the jurisdiction of Chaturshringi,Hinjewadi and Sangvi police stations, along the city borders.
