Student found dead in Bhushi dam

Now, tourists who climb the rocks along the waterfall in the area will also be fined.

A student of Sinhagad college was found dead in the Bhushi Dam in Lonavala on Friday. The police have identified the deceased as Pratik Sunil Vyavhare (20), a native of Niphad in Nashik district. He was studying at the Sinhagad college in Warje Malwadi area and was residing in the college hostel.

Some local people saw Pratik’s body floating in the Bhushi Dam water around 2 pm on Friday and then informed the police. As soon as the police team reached the spot, they fished out the body with the help of local residents. His family and college were informed about his death. A probe is on to know how he drowned and with whom he went to the dam.

The Bhushi dam is a popular tourist destination during the summer. The police have appealed to citizens to take proper precautionary measures while enjoying themselves in the water.

According to figures available with Lonavala town police station, on an average, seven people drown every year in and around Bhushi dam. Over 35 people have drowned since 2008. Since last year, in view of the increasing number of casualties here, the Pune rural police decided to stop the entry of visitors into the Bhushi Dam area after 3 pm and evacuate the surroundings by 5 pm.

Tourists who climb the rocks along the waterfall in the area will also be fined.
