Two days after a Pune-based businessman was duped of Rs 21 lakh by men impersonating Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, police on Monday arrested six persons including a Mumbai Police constable,a real estate agent and a former employee of the victim.
Swargate police said five persons went to the house Sohrab Kayani (59) in Gultekdi area on Saturday night. Kayani, who is a partner in the famous Kayani Bakery in Camp area, was alone at home at the time of the raid. The fake CBI officers showed their identity cards, which were forged, and stated they were officers of inspector and deputy superintendent rank.
Senior inspector Ram Pathare said,They told Kayani that they had come to know that he was running a hawala racket and had come to take action against him. They demanded money from him. Kayani, who got frightened, paid them Rs 21 lakh. They asked him to cough up Rs 1 crore for settling the matter and said if the money was not paid till the next day, they will initiate action against him. They also told him that raids were under way at his brothers houses too.
Police formed teams to work on various leads and the sketches of suspects were made. Pathare said,Based on the information we received from our informants,we arrested Nilesh Satyavan Sonavane (36),who had earlier worked for Kayani. After sustained interrogation,we zeroed down to one Manish Mohanlal Ojha (59),a real estate agent from Mira Road area in Mumbai. Based on the information provided by Nilesh,we know that Ojha masterminded the plan to dupe Kayani.
Further information from the arrested suspects led police to one Sunil Kasbe,a constable with Virar police station in Mumbai. Pathare said Kasbe was part of the team that conducted the raid at Kayanis house. The other arrested suspects have been identified as Pramod Rathod,Ajit Shirke and Atul Patankar.
