In a bid to make up for the shortage of police personnel available with the Pune division, the railway administration has now decided to deploy about 50 home guards to the railway premise and trains.

DRM Suneet Sharma said the administration has started the process to hire 50 home guards as part of a temporary arrangement. Pune division railway officials have been complaining of acute staff shortage in the RPF and Government Railway Police (GRP). Presently,100 out of the sanctioned strength of 514 posts are vacant in the Pune division. Though there were plans to recruit 200 more personnel,it has so far remained only on paper.

The GRP is no different. The sanctioned strength of the Pune Railway Police Station is 170. However,at present there are only 125 police constables with the station.

“The efforts are on to get more RPF men but the process for this is long and tedious. Eight home guards have been deployed and 42 are in the process. It will certainly help us in stepping up the security,” the DRM said.

To beef up security, the CCTV cameras are also being replaced with more advancedc one,the DRM said.
