Shive Sena corporator Prithviraj Sutar has submitted a proposal to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for setting up of a junior college where students will be taught all subjects of science stream in Marathi medium.
The move is being seen as Shiv Senas effort to regain its lost pride after the emergence of MNS as a strong opposition party.
Of the five junior colleges run by the civic body only one college offers science stream. The subjects are taught in english medium. Marathi is a state language and education should be made available in this medium at school and college level, said Sutar.
He said every state or local civic body have the right to start educational institutes based on medium of their choice.
The civic body should set up a junior college where students are taught science subjects in Marathi as against the existing practice of english medium, he said.
In response to the proposal,Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak said there is no provision in the budget for starting such a college.
It will be difficult to make funds available to start a new college. Funds of at least Rs 10 crore will be required. Such a college can only be set up if its executed on built operate and transfer basis, he added.
The proposal tabled in the women and child welfare committee will now come up for discussion in the next meeting scheduled for next week.
