He has been the face behind structures like the Suzlon headquarters, the Mahindra World College and a host of other iconic buildings across the city. And architect Christopher Benninger recently added another feather to his cap when he was presented with the award for ‘Best Book on Architecture’ at a function held in New Delhi for Letters to a Young Architect’. Speaking about the same he says,Writing a book is a solitary form of self-indulgence. When it is published it is like a small bird pushed out of the nest, and one expects it to fall into ignominy. But when it flies on to the Best Selling Non-Fiction List for eighteen weeks, there is a sense of satisfaction. When it is published in Chinese, floating in digital space on Kindle, and wins the award for Best Architectural Book of the year there is only amazement! The book, which is a poignant memoir of Benninger’s life in India, also talks about his personal concerns about the theories of architecture and about contemporary and urban issues. The book is portrayed through a medium of articles, lectures and essays over the last decade and also has autobiographical narratives and ideas reflecting a man’s journey from America to India and his philosophical experiences that have changed over time. In addition he has also written about his encounters with the likes of Jose Luis Sert,Walter Gropius,Arnold Toynbee and Buckminster Fuller and the learning experiences that they have provided to him in his journey as an architect.
