The appeal made by ruling NCP in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) along with the civic administration to save water has evoked sharp criticism from the Opposition and NGOs,alleging the ruling alliance of failing in fulfilling the basic needs of citizens. They have also criticised the NCP for not including any other party for discussion on water issue.

“The NCP deliberately kept the leaders of other parties out of the meeting. They were scared as the Opposition would have questioned them about their failure to provide sufficient water for citizens,” said city BJP chief Vikas Mathkari.

He said the water crisis has emerged due to poor performance of NCP and proved the inefficiency of the civic administration.

Leader of Opposition Vasant More of MNS threatened to hold an agitation against the ruling party for not taking other political parties into confidence while discussing the water issue.

Sena’s Shyam Deshpande said the picture created by the irrigation department was completely misleading.

Groups of NGOs have written to the municipal commissioner on the poor handling of water shortage.
