An RTI application filed by activist Vihar Durve has revealed that a list of works amounting to Rs 8.26 crore proposed by Sassoon General Hospital is pending with the state government.
The RTI said the works include fitting a central oxygen system in the proposed trauma care centre,getting a mechanised laundry,renovation of the Ear Nose Throat (ENT),an ophthalmology department,building a compound wall and fitting commodes in toilet blocks,all amounting to an expenditure of Rs 8.26 crore.
Durve,who had filed an application seeking expenditure details,said on Wednesday that out of 838 administrative posts,at least 245 are lying vacant and out of 216 technical posts,48 are lying vacant. Durve has sent a list of demands to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan,pointing out that the list of patients was increasing at Sassoon but facilities were not up to the expectations.
According to the RTI reply,more than 50,000 patients are treated annually at the out-patient department while 13,000-14,000 major operations are performed every year. The RTI reply said while Sassoon Hospital requires space,the National Institute of Virology (NIV) has occupied land belonging to Sassoon which is around 8311.27 sq mts. Sassoon had said it required the plot for expansion.
