For PhD candidates in the dark about the future of their thesis even months after submission, there’s some good news. Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has introduced an online tracking system where PhD candidates can track the status of their thesis. There are nearly 5,000 registered PhD candidates at the varsity, officials said.
Announced this week, the system will ensure that the progress of all candidates, whose data has been entered into the system, will be tracked at every stage. The online system will also help the university track details such as the total number of candidates per PhD guide, whether candidates are finishing their thesis in the stipulated time, details of the PhD guides and their approvals.

“There are many benefits of this system for students. Currently, if a candidate submits their thesis, it is the responsibility of the PG section to send it to the external referee. With the online tracking, the candidate can check if this was sent in time or not. Likewise, in the current system, the candidate does not know about the status of the thesis after submitting it to the section till the thesis is approved. Sometimes these processes tend to go on for months and candidates can get anxious. Through the new system, they can track the progress at every stage,” said Dr V B Gaikwad, Director, Board of College and University Development, SPPU.
