Pune police have geared up for the smooth passage of the yearly processions of palkhis or palanquins of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram. Traffic police have chalked a plan for traffic diversions during the stay and passage of the palkhis in the city from Tuesday to Friday.
The Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi, which started its procession from Dehu on Monday, would be halting at Inamdar Wada on the same night and reach Akurdi on Tuesday. The Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi, which would begin its procession from Alandi on Tuesday would halt at Gandhi-wada at night. Both processions would meet at Wakdewadi in Pune on Wednesday.
DCP (Traffic) Praveen Munde said, “For the yearly procession of palkhis, we have prepared a plan for road diversions, as some key roads would be closed for the processions to pass.”
The Special Branch of the city police has also made a plan for deployment of police teams all along the route of the processions. Quick Response Teams, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, Anti-Chain Snatching teams and teams from local police stations would be on the vigil under the supervision of senior officers.
On Tuesday, traffic from Dehu Phata to Bhakti Shakti Chowk would be diverted via Dehu Phata to Katraj Bypass for heavy vehicles from 6 am. Traffic from Bhakti Shakti Chowk to Dehu Phata would be diverted via Khandoba Mal, Thermax Chowk and Dehu Road. Traffic between Nigdi Octroi Booth and Khandoba Mal through the grade separator and on both service roads would be closed between 2 and 6 pm as required.
On Wednesday, traffic between Pimpri Chowk and Pimpri bridge would be closed and citizens have been requested to use the link road to Chinchwad village or the road from Pimpri Camp to Jamtani Chowk. After the processions reach Vallabhnagar Chowk, the underpass near HA Company and the road from Nehru Nagar to DY Patil College would be closed.
