While a majority of subways are unfit to be used for pedestrians, there are a few which are in good shape. They present a picture of being neat, clean, well lit and guarded. High footfall of users on these subways also proves that if maintained well, the subways can serve their purpose.
Garware Chowk, near Deccan Gymkhana Road
Garware subway, near Deccan Gymkhana Road, is probably one of the safest subways in the city and even one of the most pleasant ones to use. More than half of the portion is open to sky and visible from the main road. A local flower seller says the subway sees a lot of pedestrian movement and even security guards are posted here.
“It is usually very clean and we see a lot of people, especially senior citizens, who come here to sit and chat as there is a kind of sitting arrangement too. It’s very pleasant here as it is airy with no foul smell. Sometimes, I have even seen a man who sings here in the evenings,” said Sunita Dhekane, a pedestrian who uses the subway regularly.
Subway near Mhatre Bridge
One of the better ones, this subway was not only well lit but was also relatively cleaner with no foul smell. To top it all, it had a security guard. “I am posted here for one-and-a-half years as a guard. We have two shifts, morning and evening. No untoward incidents have occurred till now, but we have to be extra vigilant in the night,” said Vilas Shinde, the guard at the subway.
However, considering that the subway has multiple exits, some signages on the directions would have been helpful to first-time users.
It’s well lit. It has a security guard manning the entrance and exit. It’s also neat and clean.
It’s quite popular with the pedestrians.
