Pune police arrest college student, youth for possessing Mephedrone worth Rs 1 lakh

THE CITY police have arrested two persons, including a 23-year-old college student pursuing a degree in designing from a reputed college in Vimannagar, for alleged possession of the narcotic drug — Mephedrone or Meow Meow worth Rs 1 lakh. The police suspect that the two were selling contraband to college students in the area.

A joint team, comprising officers from Vimantal police station and crime branch, arrested the two on Sunday evening following a tip off. Those arrested have been identified as Prakhar Chandra, a resident of Kalyaninagar in the final year of college, and Mohan Mallappa Gaudgiri, 20, resident of Vadgaon Sheri who had dropped out of school.

Investigating officer Assistant Inspector DN Jaysingkar said, “We suspect the two had brought the drug from a peddler outside Pune and intended to sell it to college students. Based on the information through a tip off, a trap was laid and the two were arrested. We have seized 18 grams of Meow Meow worth Rs one lakh and a car from their possession.”

The two were produced before a court in Pune on Monday and have been remanded to police custody till Thursday. Pune Newsline, in a series of articles titled ‘Young and Addicted’ in April this year, had covered the issue of rising drug abuse among college students.
