Over 300 junior squash players from Chennai,Chandigarh,Gujarat,Delhi,Mumbai and Pune will be seen in action at the Kirloskar Pune Open Squash Championships,which will be played at the Poona Club Squash courts.
Tournament director Rahul Agarwal said the event that would be held under the auspices of Squash and Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) and organised by Poona Club,would be played in two legs,the junior events from August 15 to 18,while the second part of the event with the Open and Masters categories will be held in November. The SRFI has recognised the junior tournament as a level 3 event.
He added that the tournament would be sponsored for the sixth consecutive year by the Kirloskar Group.
A total of 11 junior events will be conducted in the boys and girls categories. The event will carry valuable ranking points from the quarterfinals and a total prize money of Rs 2,25,000.
The different categories of the tournament are under-9 mixed category,for boys,under-11,under-13,under-15,under-17 and under-19,and for girls, under-11,under-13,under-15,under-17 and under-19 events.
Top ranked SRFI players Sachika Ingale in the under-19 event,Jui Kalgutkar (U-17),Akanksha Salunke (U-15),Abhilasha Bhasin (U-13),Megha Bhatia (U-11),Abhimanyu Shah,boys (U-19),Aishwarya Singh (U-17),Vikas Mehera (U-15),Tushar Shahani (U-13) and Neel Joshi (U-11) among others will be seen in action at the event.
The tournament has been conducted regularly for the last 12 years and has thrown up new talent and presented opportunities to young city players. The success of international players like Abhinav Sinha,who represented India,is testimony to the growing popularity of the sport in the city, Agarwal said.
