Pune: Man arrested for ‘molesting, assaulting’ 16-year-old girl

Police lodged an offence in this case under sections 354 (d), 324, 506 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly molesting and assaulting a 16-year-old school girl with a cutter. The accused has been identified as Devidas Bhimappa Marti. According to police, the girl was going to school near Mahatma Phule Mandai at around 7 pm on October 17 when the accused allegedly followed her. He “teased” her by blowing whistles, singing songs and passing “scurrilous” comments at her. The girl states that she became angry, chased the person and assaulted him with her slippers.

According to police, on October 19 when she came outside her school at around 11 am, the man was waiting for her and allegedly assaulted her from behind with a sharp cutter, leaving injuries on her abdomen and hands. He then fled the spot.

The girl then lodged a complaint against the accused at the Vishrambaug police station. Police lodged an offence in this case under sections 354 (d), 324, 506 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

A police team initiated probe in this case as per the instructions of senior police inspector Hemant Bhat. Police got clues from a video footage captured by a CCTV camera installed near the crime scene. Following the clues, police identified the assailant and arrested Devidas Marti on Thursday. Police said that Marti is unemployed and a street dweller. Police have recovered the cutter he allegedly used to assault the girl.
