Police said that Sontakke left his home around 11.30 am and was going to the market in his car to buy some items for Laxmipujan for Diwali. He went past Ganraj Mangal Karyalay on Baner Road and then to Balewadi Phata, when a person intercepted Sontakke’s car on the Pimple Nilakh bridge.

This person accused Sontakke for rash driving and causing damage to a lamp and side mirror of his four-wheeler near Ganraj Mangal Karyalay.

The person said that he had called police to the spot. Threatening to take police action, the person demanded Rs 35,000 as compensation from Sontakke. Later, he settled for Rs 22,000. He then went to Sontakke’s house, where Sontakke collected his ATM card. They both then went to the ATM center.

Sontakke withdrew the money and gave it to the person, and noted down the number of this person’s four wheeler. Three days later, Sontakke found out that a person took money in a similar manner from a fellow resident of his neighbourhood, Pavan Gupta. Sontakke then informed his friends about the con man.

Around 10.30 am on Friday, Sontakke got a call from his friend, who spotted a person demanding money from a car driver near a crematorium in Baner.
Sontakke immediately informed the police. He then along with police team led by assistant inspector Sandesh Kenjale rushed to the spot and nabbed the person, who was identified as Yogesh Giri.

Police are probing whether he has duped more persons in the city.
