Police took the help of local rescue team ‘Shivdurga Mitra’. (Express ohoto)A 21-year-old engineering student in Maharashtra Tuesday drowned in a reservoir in Plus Valley, around 60 kilometres from Pune, while he was on a picnic with his friends, the police said.
The body of Rohan Viresh Loni, who hailed from Solapur, was fished out by a local search team later in the evening, said an officer.
According to the police at Paud station, the tragedy occurred when Loni, a final-year engineering student at a Pune college, was swimming along with his friends in the reservoir.
“Loni and his friends had come to Plus Valley, a deep gorge located near Tamhini in Mulshi taluka. They entered a natural reservoir for swimming. Loni could not gauge the depth at one point, and subsequently drowned. His friends informed the police and a team was sent,” Inspector Manoj Yadav said.
Police took the help of local rescue team ‘Shivdurga Mitra’. “The reservoir is located at the bottom of the valley, around 1,000 feet deep. Our team trekked down the valley and fished out the body,” Sunil Gaikwad of the group said.
The police handed over the body to Loni’s family members, said an officer.
