Pune: 68-year-old ‘beaten up’ for using toilet, dies later

The incident took place in Shaniwar Peth Monday when Mohan Dhanaji Chauhan (68), who stays in the vicinity had gone there to visit his friends.

A senior citizen died after he was allegedly abused and beaten up by a resident of a mutt in Shaniwar Peth for using the toilet situated inside the mutt complex.

The incident took place at the Gondawalekar Maharaj Mutt in Shaniwar Peth Monday when Mohan Dhanaji Chauhan (68), who stays in the vicinity had gone there to visit his friends. Sanjay Mane (42), who stays at an apartment on the first floor of the mutt has been arrested by the police under charges of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’.

According to Vishrambaug Police, Chauhan had gone to the mutt Monday at about 7 pm to meet his friends. While there, he visited a toilet situated on the ground floor right below Sane’s apartment to relieve his bladder.

After noticing this, Sane objected and entered into an argument with Chauhan. He reportedly abused and manhandled him.

“Chauhan started to feel uneasy and after some time fainted. He was declared dead when taken to a hospital. He had a history of heart strokes. We are waiting for autopsy report to find out the actual reason behind the death,” said S B Patil, Police Sub-Inspector.
