A 24-year-old woman working for an IT company was allegedly gang-raped by her colleague and his friends on Saturday night, police said. Based on her complaint, the Mundhwa police on Sunday arrested five men, including her colleague, and a woman who was allegedly present when the incident took place.
The woman approached the Mundhwa police station with her father on Sunday morning, officers said. She was immediately admitted to Sassoon hospital and in the afternoon, a First Information Report was registered at Mundhwa police station.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ravindra Rasal said, “As per her complaint, the victim was supposed to go to a company event with her colleague Abhinay Sahi. But he took her to a hotel in Mundhwa, where he insisted that she have ice tea. It is suspected that the beverage had some kind of sedative. The woman does not remember what happened after that. She woke up sometime around midnight in an apartment, where she saw the others who have been named in the FIR. They have been arrested. A complaint of rape has been registered after her medical examination confirmed sexual assault. She is now under treatment and is out of danger. Further tests will reveal what sedative was used.”
Those arrested are Sahi (28), who is originally from Dehra Dun, his friends Abhijit Devray (25) from Uttar Pradesh, Anand Prahlad Chanar (27), originally from Kerala, Devavrat Dube (27) from Uttar Pradesh and Diptashu Gupta (26) of Chhattisgarh. A 27-year-old woman has also been arrested under section 114 of the Indian Penal Code (being present when offence was committed). The five men have been booked for rape.
Primary probe has revealed that the suspects took the victim to a flat in Tingrenagar, where they raped her. Police said Sahi later dropped the victim to her home, after which she told her family members about the assault.
Immediately after the FIR was registered, a team led API SS Gharge arrested the suspects from their rented flats in Tingrenagar and Dhanori. They will be produced before a court on Monday.
In similar incidents in the city this month, two weeks ago, a 26-year-old manager at a shopping mall was allegedly raped by a 23-year-old man, who had come for a party at her home in Hadapsar on February 13. On Thursday, a college student sitting on Hanuman Hill in Pune was robbed and raped by a man.
