Since it became functional on April 28, the Nagar Road BRT road has seen as many as 10 accidents, one of which was fatal.
A police case has been registered in three instances while matters were settled amicably in the others, officials said. On May 14, 55-year-old Fakirappa Jadhav was killed when he was hit by a BRT bus while crossing the road. An offence regarding this has been registered against PMPML bus driver Rajy Tayde. On the same day, another incident happened in which two-wheeler riders were injured after they were hit by a BRT bus near the Inorbit Mall. On Thursday, Sapna Pareira (22) was hit by the bus and was seriously injured. Driver Ilahi Shamsuddin Jamadar has been booked in Yerwada Police Station.
There are two other accidents in which complaints have been registered against drivers of private vehicles. On Friday, a container hit the BRT divider leading to damage to the median and traffic jam on the route.
“The corridor has to be complete edge-to-edge before the operations commence. Presently, of the 13 km of the length, five km are yet to be constructed. At the important junctions, signals are missing. In a lot of places the dividers were broken by local people. There aren’t enough wardens deployed which would prevent them,” said Jugal Rathi of PMP Pravasi Manch.
