A woman posing as a social worker has been charged for allegedly stealing a 11-day-old baby boy in Hadapsar on Friday morning. The infant’s mother,Vaishali Ramesh Mane (30),a resident of Uruli Kanchan, registered a complaint at Bund Garden police station.

Police said Mane was admitted to ward number 24 at the hospital on November 26,where she gave birth to a baby boy on November 27.

At the hospital,Vaishali Savant approached Mane and claimed she was a social worker attached to a government approved organisation in Yerawada. Savant told Mane that her organisation supports poor people and started meeting her regularly, enquiring about her and baby’s health. She used to bring breakfast for Mane and also consulted doctors about her health, which led Mane to believe in her, said police.

Police said Mane was to be discharged from the hospital on Friday morning. Around 8.30 am,Savant visited the ward and after speaking to doctors told Mane that she would drop her home. Savant told her that she has informed her husband about it and that he would not be coming to pick her up from the hospital.

Police said Mane left for Hadapsar with Savant in an autorickshaw. On reaching Hadapsar,Savant took Mane to a hotel for breakfast. She asked her have food and hand over the baby to her. Meanwhile,Savant left the hotel with the baby saying she would buy stuff for the baby from a medical store but she never returned, they said.

After sometime,Mane realised Savant has fled with the baby and lodged a complaint with Hadapsar police. After recording her statement, the complaint was transferred to Bund Garden police station. Police have launched a search for the woman.
