Police slam Sassoon hospital for delaying rape victim’s test report

A day after the watchman and ward boy of PCMC-run Bhosari hospital were arrested for allegedly raping 25-year-old inmate of a shelter home who was undergoing treatment at the hospital,police have slammed the officials of Sassoon General Hospital for delaying the victim’s medical report .

The partially speech-impaired woman,who was being treated viral fever at the hospital,was allegedly raped by the watchman Pramod Mandekar in the hospital lift around 8.30 pm on Thursday. Police had also arrested ward boy Shailesh Jadhav,who helped him in the crime.

“The complaint was registered on Saturday afternoon following which the victim was sent to Sassoon hospital for medical test. We did not receive the medical examination report till late on Monday,” said a senior police officer.

He added,“We know the medical test for sexual assault does not take long and there is no reason for delay. This can affect the investigation as the evidence can be destroyed. We have arrested the suspects in the case,but such delays can give them time to escape.”

D G Kulkarni,Medical Superintendent,Sassoon hospital,said the report was sent to police by Monday evening.

“We are not conducting tests just to confirm the sexual assault. She is also under going other treatment,including psychoanalysis,which takes time.”

Police said the incident came to light when the victim was discharge from the hospital and went back to the shelter home on Saturday. She narrated the incident to her caretaker in sign language following which the authorities lodged a complaint,they added. During the preliminary inquiry,the victim identified Mandekar and Jadhav who were later arrested. The duo have been remanded in police custody till Wednesday.
