The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Woman and Child Welfare Committee will now make surprise checks at organisations to ensure that civic funds are not misused.

The decision was taken at a meeting held recently,in which the civic administration sought the committee’s nod for continue funding an organisation that, according to officials, was not adhering to the terms of the contract.

“The PMC has signed a contract with Society for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons (Physically Handicapped) Education and Research Centre for funding the education and rehabilitation of 50 children from the city at the centre,” the proposal outlined. “It was decided that the PMC would pay Rs 19.48 lakh every year to the centre but a condition was put that the centre would carry out medical check-up of the children every year and submit the report to the civic body. However, the centre has carried out the medical check-up only once in the last two years,” it said.

Women and Child Welfare committee chairperson Meenal Saravde said,“We don’t know if the centre is following the conditions in the contract. We also want to know whether the funds are being used for the welfare of children. Hence,we have decided that the committee members would visit organisations before taking any decision on the proposal,” she said.

“The PMC is committed to the empowerment of the weaker sections of society and will continue to fund social service organisations. However,it is the responsibility of the committee to ensure that the public money is used appropriately,” she added.
