The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Women and Child Welfare Committee on Wednesday approved the proposal for providing free medication to students till Class X.

The proposal was tabled by Congress corporator Datta Bahirat. He said the government has made education compulsory till Class VIII and on the similar lines the civic body should take responsibility of the health of these students.

“The PMC should bear the expenditure of medical treatment of the students of Class X and the facility should be made available in all the hospitals that are on the panel of the civic body,” he said, adding that the scheme should be made available for all the schools in civic jurisdiction.

Chairperson of the committee Meenal Saravade said the committee has in-principle given its approval to the proposal as it was in the interest of citizens.

“We have sought information on the number of students that would be covered under the programme and the possible expenditure incurred by the civic body for it. We would give our final nod only after the details are tabled,” she said.
