India’s most elaborate theme park is as thrilling for adults as it is for children.
An instant smile comes on when you get out of the car at Adlabs Imagica in Khopoli, after a tiring journey in the heat. Conveniently located half way between Mumbai and Pune on the expressway, the bumpy approach road serves as a prelude to the crazily-scary,topsy-turvy,roller coaster rides that can be seen from a distance.
For those who have grown up reading, watching and listening to classic English fairytales, there is a sense of familiarity when you walk into Indias most elaborate theme park, passing through the close security check. The big bad wolf stands huffing and puffing at three little piggies on a brick roof besides which is a beanstalk with a nest full of golden eggs and Jack just around the corner. A little further down,Prince Charming is climbing up Rapunzels gold locks and Snow White is enjoying a tea party with the seven dwarfs.
The theme park, spread over 110 acres,is conveniently divided into areas for each age group. An adrenal area, fittingly called the Scream area by some, features a range of roller coaster rides. Then there is the childrens area with rides like merry-go-rounds,dinosaur area, dome theatre and the India area featuring rides based on Indian themes.
A helicopter-like ride called I for India is sure to generate curiosity. Visitors fasten their seat belts as the seats are levered up and a 90 feet screen below displays footage shot by a real helicopter flying over famous places across the country. The Mr.
India adventure is another favourite. Mr. India (Anil Kapoor) and Seema (Sridevi) introduce visitors to their fancy laboratory and new invention,a flying car,for which a rather clumsy robot monkey holds the remote. Then enters Mogambo, who has held the children and Calendar hostage to get the invisibility bracelet. Visitors then have to sit in the flying car and help Mr. India rescue his children from Mogambos evil plans.
A ride that is only for the bravehearts is Gold Rush. It features a drop from 66 feet-high with the coaster then speeding through tunnels and gold mines at a teeth-clenching speed of 65km per hour. Follow this up with mind-boggling spinning and swinging of Scream Machine and you are sure to be disorientated for the next 30 minutes.
For those who can still stomach some food, the park has four restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. Red Bonnet is an American diner,Zeze Bar and Grill offers scrumptious African delights,Armada the Tapas Bar is located on a ship and is the place for some Spanish romance and Robertos Food Coaster, under a huge tent,is the ordinary food court with an extraordinary food coaster bringing the chefs specials on its track.
