The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has “decided” to purchase helicopters for its office-bearers. This was announced by “Mayor” Shrikar Pardeshi at a civic body “meeting” held at PCMC headquarters in Pimpri on Friday.

The decision instantly drew loud applause from office-bearers and corporators cutting across lines. The “mayor,” who all the time sports a serious look, seemed to be extremely happy as he announced the grand plans of the civic body much to the delight of those present.

Going a step further, the “mayor” said helipads would be constructed across the industrial town.

Shrikar Pardeshi as mayor ? Yes,it happened at the mock general body meeting of the civic body on Friday where the roles were reversed, triggering a laugh riot. The mock civic body meeting was organised as part of the Foundation Day celebrations of PCMC.

While Pardeshi donned the robe of the mayor, officers became corporators. Mayor Mohini Lande turned municipal commissioner. She wore a smile at most times, but in between became serious like Pardeshi is when the house is in session.

Young corporator Jeetendra Nanaware served as the municipal secretary. The civic chief in the role of a mayor spared no effort to taunt the corporators who are known to make wild demands and often found criticising the administration.

Not to be left behind, the officers as the corporators also took several digs at the corporators, who generally go all out targetting officials in regular civic generally body meetings.

Highlighting the differences among leaders in political parties,‘mayor’ Pardeshi said,“I will speak to the ‘bhau’ (party boss) and let you now…A decision is taken at party meeting, but the opposite happens at civic meetings. There should be a special helipad for the mayor. Rivers should be demarcated as per the assembly constituencies.” He went on and said,“We give assurances to people, but should check whether necessary provision were being made…What officers do not know, civic consultants are aware of…”

Executive engineer Sanjay Kulkarni played the role of the opposition leader. Corporator Seema Savle served as the deputy director of Town Planning. NCP House leader Mangala Kadam became the assistant municipal commissioner, corporator Prashant Shitole was the chief auditor, the chief import duty superintendent was corporator R S Kumar,Additional Municipal Commissioner Tanaji Shinde became a corporator.

Several officers, including Joint City Engineer Pravin Tupe,Omprakash Bahiwal,Yashwant Mane, corporators Rajendra Jagtap Shamim Pathan and Dattatray Sane, participated in the mock debate, generating much guffaws in the house.
